Good News and Bad News!

So are you the type of person who likes the good news first or last?  I'm sure it says something about your personality but that is another post. So the BAD news is after twelve years of unlocking that sticky front door lock - I am closing Farmhand Feed & Home so that I may retire.  The GOOD news is we have started sales to clear the shelves. It is a bittersweet decision as we have made so many friends (two legged and 4 legged). We will miss you but I need to slow down (Ha-Ha).  And I need to go catch some salmon with my retired husband.  So watch the papers for the discounts and sale prices.  Each week the discounts get larger. We will be here until  Christmas. We will do more posts as we progress.  We will be closed on Saturday, Nov 24 so that we can go do one of our Christmas displays at Monticello in Portland.  That show opens Nov 30 at 8:00 am and should not be missed.  We will post pictures of both of our displays to tempt you to a fun day of shopping in Portland.  There will be no pictures with this post cause I would have puffy red eyes....  Mary

Goodbye Noel

It is with a heavy heart that I had to put down our 18 year old friend today.  Old age is not something even the best vet can cure.  Thank you to Cottage Grove Veterinary Clinic and Dr Kenna for the best care and such kindness to this noble cat. You made the whole procedure peaceful and gentle.  Noel loved to sleep on our counter and enjoyed all the attention he received.  I think I can safely say that more people knew his name than mine.  He was a Christmas gift to Sara 18 years ago and his gentle spirit encircled our whole family.  He was our farm cat and then feedstore cat.  We will remember him always. Run the fields, sweet cat, you deserve your freedom.....

Thankful...

From a whole set of plum transferware dishes to a plum Victorian ladies couch to the most beautiful Venetian mirror (C.1900), our new Thanksgiving dispaly came together nicely. We love doing displays at Monticello. You have got to go visit and see for yourself.  Some rainy day head on up to Portland and Monticello - you will be glad you did. Next we will do two displays for their Christmas Open House that starts November 30 at 8:00 am.  Don't miss that one!  Soon we will give you sneek peeks at what we have been planning and hoarding for. Now enjoy some time planning a tasty Thanksgiving dinner for family and friends.  Remember to invite one or two people who might not have family nearby.  Be thankful.... we are so blessed!

She's Picky!!!

Our local upholsterer - Nancy Pruitt - is picky. Very, very picky!  We are so glad she is cause look at the quality chairs she just upholstered for us. Amazing work.  They don't even look like the same chairs. The fabric is 100% linen and the stencil is done in gray and charcoal.  Beautiful chairs.  Great job Nancy.  We love your work.... The chairs would make a wonderful addition to your home. Come sit in one.

Something wicked

Something wicked this way comes..... Sara and I had fun switching our Monticello Antiques booth to halloween on Sunday.  From flying crows carrying off the babies in vintage dressing gowns to red glowing witches balls lighting up your trick or treaters! From lab bottles to fill with green potions to a true vintage black witch dress (okay it's a Victorian mourning dress!).  Something wicked for everyone.  Our 50% off all halloween sale continues at the store.  Come see.... The one who didn't get away!

The husband - the one who didn't get away, holding his one that didn't get away.  A freshly caught fall chinook and I know what I am having for dinner..... Another reason I love fall!

Fall ladders and weapon cucumbers

How do you decorate your porch for Fall?  Come get one of our vintage wooden ladders and have some fun.  You can put buckets of fall pumpkins and gourds on the rungs.  You can drape towels and wonderful plaid blankets for color.  They are only $15 so come choose yours.  The last picture is of a decorative, non-edible cucumber that have sharp spines - hence we call them weapon cucumbers.  They last a long time and make a nice display. Amanda has grown them and is selling them for your fall decorating Just be careful how you handle them.....

I think BIG

My husband always says that when I go buying I always choose the heaviest thing to buy.  Makes me sound like I walk around flea markets mumbling "Nope - love it but it's not heavy enough".  I don't.  It just happens that the big old hutch is one wide board and heavy.  Or the scale is real cast iron.  You get the picture.  Well this windmill is eight feet in diameter and because of its gorgeous size it is heavy.  But isn't it grand.  It will go up to Monticello Antiques for sale.  Hear there is already a buyer waiting for it.  And yes my husband will have to help me move it on Sunday and I can already hear him "Why do you always have to buy the heaviest thing?".... Mary    P.S. Sara likes Oregon State and her graphic design portfolio review class is her favorite so far.

How to say Goodbye?

How do you say goodbye to your best employee that has been with you for the entire 12 years at the store? How do you say thank you for all those late nights decorating those seven Christmas trees in time for our open house (all 12 of them)? How do you say thank you for helping all those customers with hundreds of questions each day and still having a smile as we headed home (most days)? How do you say thank you for helping me get that angry oppossum out of the grain warehouse that night? Then how do you say goodbye to your beautiful daughter who is moving to Corvallis to go to OSU to finish her graphic design degree? A double heartwrenching goodbye.  I raised both my kids with good secure roots and strong wings.  So now, don't get me wrong, I want her to use those wings and soar to her chosen career. She will make a wonderful, artistic graphic designer.  But how do you say goodbye to those wonderful days (most days) that turned into 26 years of being with and working with a wonderful human being?  Sara - all I can think of is "Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me make my dream come true, now go make you dream come true.  You have our support and love every day and we will remain close no matter where you move. We are so proud of you. FLY....    Love, your Mom

Monticello Fall Show

Here are some photos of Monticello's Fall Show. What an amazing group of people...try not to drool on your keyboard.

Monticello Fall Show

Repent Fall Display

We amped up our display inside Monticello for fall! Wonderful handmade signs on vintage wood, pumpkins, chippy chairs, jadite cups and saucers, wool blankets, crows, and much more! I especially had fun with the last image, a miniature farm scene complete with a polar bear!

Repent in Monticello Fall Show

Well, we got our display up in Monticello's Fall Show! We were very honored to be a part of the very talented team who makes up the Fall Show at Monticello Antiques in Portland. There are some drop dead gorgeous displays and amazing people, they know how to display it to make you want it ALL! We filled our display with the wonderful velvet pumpkins we've had years previous, crows, mums, kale, antlers, wheat, and much more!
